There are still a few people around today that can say they went to a one room school house without indoor plumbing or running water. I am one of them!
— Robert Chambers, Councillor Ward Four

"SS#15 Fairfield School has been gone for quite a while but there are still people in the community who went there. I wonder how many people remember pumping the water, lining up to go inside after recess, shaking hands with pogo the little clown if you got your spelling correct or standing in the corner for acting up. Those were good times from grade one until grade four.

Next, it was off to Scotland Public School. Bathrooms! The school seemed pretty big until I finished grade eight and headed into Burford High School.

Many of the students who attended these schools are still living in Ward Four today. It's one of those things that make our communities so strong. Everyone seems to know each other!

If I thought Burford High School was big ,you can imagine what I thought when I arrived at the University of Waterloo. Nevertheless, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree(Honours) in Chemistry and then continued on to the University of Western Ontario, graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree  (Chemistry/Agriculture).

Although Fairfield is gone, the bell remains. Old Scotland Public is gone too but a new school stands in its place. And Burford High is still there but it's now Burford Elementary.

What will never be gone are the memories we have and the friends we made in the schools in Ward Four!

My formal education was over. My real education was just beginning."

I graduated with honours from two universities, but I got my education by going to the schools in Ward Four, by talking with my neighbours in the coffee shops, by working in the fields on the farm and by being on council for over thirty years.
